A young Black girl, upon seeing Uhura on Star Trek, excitedly cried out, "Ma, there's a Black woman on TV, and she ain't no maid!" That girl grew up to become Whoopi Goldberg, who, when she heard about Star Trek: The Next Generation, expressed a desire to be involved in it. The producers didn't take her seriously at first, but, in season 2, they created for her the role of Guinan, the enigmatic El-Aurian bartender, and her domain, the Enterprise's Ten-Forward lounge.
