I know the whole experience of coming out as transgender, so I can sympathize. But what I thought of as I read this was a bit of dialogue between Bran Stark and his father Ned in GoT:

"Can a man be brave if he is afraid?"

"That is the only time a man can be brave."

(Of course, that applies to women and enbys, too.)
