Members of two bands at the Charterhouse School in Surrey, England, joined forces after their bands broke up. Two former members of The Anon, Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford, and two former members of The Garden Wall, Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel, formed a group briefly named “The New Anon” but given a new name by their first producer: Genesis. (Steve Hackett and Phil Collins were later additions.)
