So many state flags, including New York's, are most charitably described as "the state seal on a bedsheet." Some are of more iconic design, such as California's "Bear Flag." But Colorado's is such a simple, iconic design that it compares favorably to many national flags in the world. Only a few other states (Texas and Hawaii come to mind) have designs that can match it. (Also Alabama, to my surprise.)
